Southern Cyprus is also known as Greek Cyprus. Greek is the main language spoken in the locality. The Southern Region covers three major districts of the country.
Larnaca District's main town is Larnaca. A small part of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is not recognized internationally. Larnaca hosts both a port and the island's most important airport, Larnaca International Airport.
Limassol District's main town is Limassol. A part of the district consists of the British overseas territory Akrotiri and Dhekelia and is under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom.
Nicosia District is divided into two parts of Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus. The Southern part of the city is governed by the Greeks and it is the island country's capital city, Nicosia.
Paphos District is situated in the western part of Cyprus. Its main town and capital is Paphos. The entire district is controlled by the internationally recognized government of Cyprus. Its coastal area is characterized by gulfs and coves, capes and points, beaches and tiny isles. The district can be divided into three morphological regions: the coastal plain, lying mainly below 200 metres, the hilly area extending from plain up to the igneous rocks of Paphos forest and the mountainous region, lying mainly on the igneous rocks of the Paphos forest. North-west of the District is the Akamas peninsula. |
