Northern Cyprus is also known as Turkish Cyprus. Turkish is the main language spoken in the locality. The Northern Region covers three major districts of the country.
Famagusta District is the island's most important port, Famagusta. The city of Fagamusta is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is only recognized by Turkey.
Most of the district has been under Turkish control and the northeastern section, including the Karpasia Peninsula, has been administered separately as the Iskele District, a division not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus.
Kyrenia District is the smallest of Cyprus' districts, and is the only one fully controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Turkey.
Nicosia District is the island country's capital city, Nicosia. The Turkish-controlled northern part of the city is the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey.
Turkish-controlled areas of the Larnaca District of the Republic of Cyprus are administered as part of Nicosia District, while western parts of the Nicosia District under Turkish control are administered as part of the new Güzelyurt District. |
